Joshua A. Kroll

Joshua A. Kroll is a computer scientist and a postdoctoral research scholar at the School of Information, University of California at Berkeley, where he studies the relationship between governance, public policy, and computer systems. Joshua investigates how technology can satisfy normative goals such as fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics. His article Accountable Algorithms received the Future of Privacy Forum's Privacy Papers for Policymakers Award in 2017. Joshua's previous work spans accountable algorithms, cryptography, software security, formal methods, Bitcoin, and the technical aspects of cybersecurity policy. He spent two years working on cryptography and internet security at the web performance and security company Cloudflare. Joshua is also the founder and principal computer scientist at Rocky Coast Research, LLC, a boutique consulting firm focused on helping organizations solve complex data governance, security, privacy, and technology policy issues that arise from big data analysis and machine learning.
